Are you looking for somewhere to play Pickleball in Johannesburg?
Johannesburg currently has 8 different pickleball locations as listed on the official Pickleball South Africa website. You can also find these different locations on the Pickleheads website too! If you haven’t heard of Pickleheads it is a great location to find different courts around town as well as available games or events coming in your area regardless of the club. The different facilities vary in what you need to be able to play there. Some you can only play if you have a membership, some you pay a flat fee and some offer both options. In this article we will go through each of the different facilities and give some general information for each location.
Bryanston Country Club
The Bryanston Country Club offers four outdoor hard courts that have permanent lines and nets. It is located in Bryanston not too far from the N1. To be able to play at the Bryanston Country Club you need to have a membership. Memberships will cost you R8500/year or R744/month if you are 30 years or older. This would allow you access to all of the non-golf facilities at the club.
Glenhazel Tennis Club
This is a tennis club that also offers some temporary nets that are available for pickleball. I have not been able to find much information about pickleball at the Glenhazel Tennis club. There was no website and just very basic information on pickleheads and facebook. It seems as if tennis is the primary focus with just some pickleball as needed. Access to the pickleball facilities is listed as unknown on pickleheads.
GPC Pickleball
GPC Pickleball is the newest club to scene for pickleball in Johannesburg. Built just recently in July of 2024 GPC has 4 brand new courts with permanent lines and nets! GPC Pickleball is located in Paulshoff right off of the N1 at The German Country Club. To play at GPC Pickleball starts at R250/hour per court. Being at The German Country Club, GPC provides excellent facilities including a restaurant, locker rooms, and other racquet sports too. Weekly events are also held at GPC which you can find here. Northcliff Panthers Pickleball
Northcliff Panthers Pickleball operates out of the Irish club in Northcliff. There are four permanent courts with permanent nets on site. Events and social plays are frequently happening at the club as well. There are benefits to being at the Irish club as you will be able to also order food and drink while you are there. According to Pickleheads a membership is required to play however, we know that one time fees are also an option. The facilities have lights to be able to play in the evenings as well. There is an active WhatsApp group available too.
New Northcliff Pickleball Club
The New Northcliff Pickleball Club is another new facility in the scene. The Pickleball club is located at the New Northcliff Tennis Club and has four permanent outdoor courts with lights. On Pickleheads it also says that a membership is required to play but after further investigation the membership just gives you a discount on play. The membership is R1000/yr which allows you to play at R25pp/hr so you can break even after 40 hours of play! There seems to be regular events and social play at the club too. PicklePlay Wendywood
PicklePlay Wendywood is one of the pickleball facilities that has been around for the longest time here in Johannesburg. The Wendywood warriors facility offers 4 permanent courts with lights in Wendywood, Sandton. There are open play session multiple times a week. There are membership options to be able to play at as many social play events as you want for a monthly subscription. PicklePlay Wendywood offers their general social play for R50pp which will get you 2-3 hours of play. Operating mostly through Reclub you can find their upcoming events there or in their active WhatsApp group.
Ridge Park Sports Club
Located near the Gold Reef City theme park, Ridge Park Sports Club offers two pickleball courts with permanent lines and nets. They do not actively advertise pickleball on their website and I am unsure if the location is still active. We do not have much other information on this location.
The Country Club Johannesburg, Auckland Park
The Country Club Johannesburg, Auckland Park has 3 permanent pickleball courts. In order to play at this location you will need to be a member. To become a member it will be R7,600 if you are 31-34 yrs old as an entry fee and then another R16,100 subscription fee per year. This membership allows you to have access to many different sports at their facility and is not just for pickleball. If you are looking for somewhere that will provide a slew of options this would be a good location. But, if you are looking primarily for pickleball it is a little steep.
